Weekly Blend #314 – Full House of Grunge

Weekly Blend #314 - Full House of Grunge
We’re back from another little break with a lot of grumbling and a lot of laughter. Hear multiple reviews of The Campaign and The Bourne Legacy, tributes to Jerry Nelson and Tony Scott, updates on the lives of the Widescreen Warrior crew (including Rafe’s “brain cloud”) and an awesome look at Detention – the film so bad it makes Thomas want to toss away his ironic hipster...

Weekly Blend #304 – Sail Into Shadow

Weekly Blend #304 - Sail Into Shadow
Dark Shadows are here again. First came the campy, classic television show, then a ’90s remake. Now we get to see Tim Burton and Johnny Depp take on the franchise. Of course, it still has the might of The Avengers to contend with. We offer a review of Dark Shadows and our take on The Avengers continual success before moving into the realm of television and discussing which shows are making...

Weekly Blend #279 – Misunderstood Aliens Without Families

It’s a super-sized, 90-minute episode this week as we make up for lost time. We explain a little bit about plans for the live broadcast (including moving the time to 2pm on Sundays) before looking back at some reviews from the past few weeks, including The Smurfs and Everything Must Go. Then we head full-bore into the films of Artist of the Month Bill Murray, taking a look at his collaborations...

Margaret’s Trailer Park: Everything Must Go

I see the name Will Ferrell anymore and half of me wants to cringe. There are movies he’s done that I adore (Stranger Than Fiction, Elf) and others that have lacked when it comes to being the total comedy package (Land of the Lost, Old School). After I unshielded my eyes and watched the newly released trailer for Everything Must Go I have to believe it will be one of the Ferrell films not to miss....

Rafe’s Rant: Have You Seen…

It’s the same story, time and time again. I meet people. It doesn’t matter what kind of people – just people. Teachers, technology advocates, fellow film lovers, shoppers at the store, and Leroy the homeless guy who sits on the island before the interstate holding up a sign asking for money (who is surprisingly well-versed in the films of Fellini). Inevitably, the conversation turns to movies....

Elf: Ultimate Collector’s Edition [Blu-ray]

I once said of Jon Favreau’s Elf (in my 2004 DVD review of Elf) that the movie was a classic the second the first image hit the screen. Time has passed, it’s six years later, and the Will Ferrell comedy has made its way to Blu-ray, affording the perfect opportunity to revisit the movie (not to mention it’s the holiday season as I write this, making it the perfect time for Elf). The passage of...

Megamind

The director of the Madagascar films, Tom McGrath, teams up with producer Ben Stiller and DreamWorks Animation – with Guillermo Del Toro as story consultant – to bring Megamind to the big screen. The animated superhero 3-D comedy features the voice talents of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, and Brad Pitt. The story, written by Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, follows...

Weekly Blend #238 – Rafe Goes to Hell

Rafe is going to hell for the remarks he makes in this week’s show about The Apostle. Thankfully, for those who might be offended, that’s toward the end of the show. Before that we look at The Other Guys, hear from The Podcast Dad on this month’s Artist of the Month selections, discuss sunburn, the importance of character arcs (and how blockbuster movies get away with avoiding them),...

Margaret’s Trailer Park: The Other Guys

We’ve all seen the suave yet tough police movies where the detectives figure it the crime at just the right moment and can backup their findings with muscle if the bad guys put up a fight. The kinds of films where Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson are partners and steal every scene for audiences everywhere. The Other Guys has an element of that, including Samuel and Dwayne just as we expect them,...

SNL Adaptations: Ranking the Movies

This weekend, Saturday Night Live storms the action scene as MacGruber, their parody of MacGuyver, becomes the latest SNL skit to be adapted for the big screen. Early word on the movie is rather positive, and it sounds like Lorne Michaels just might have another hit on his hand, and even (*shudder*) a potential franchise, should audiences give it enough love. Live hasn’t always been easy for Saturday...
