Larry Crowne [Review]

Going in to see Larry Crowne, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Trailers are designed to make movies look like fun, but sometimes the patching together of a movie’s funny or dramatic moments is misleading. So, while the trailer looked good, and the cast looked promising, I didn’t have high expectations. All in all, writer, director, actor Tom Hanks’ provides an enjoyable movie-going experience....

Margaret’s Trailer Park: Larry Crowne

Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) is getting fired from his retail job and with the notion that a college degree would mean never being laid off again, he enrolls in classes to change his life. In Larry Crowne it appears joining the college scene brings a lot of new experiences to a middle aged man from taking a speech class to joining a motor scooter gang and Hanks seems to be the best man for the job. While...

Weekly Blend #269 – Tim Was Right

As much as it hurts me to say it, Tim spends a lot of time being right this week. From his box office predictions being pretty close this week to his selection of The Great Escape as one of our viewing choices this week, Tim gets to balance out all the times he’s been wrong with a really solid week this time. Join us for discussions of Priest bombing at the box office (we didn’t see it),...

Weekly Blend #261 – Wild Dogs Can’t Be Broken

We’re far too busy to continue talking about Charlie Sheen this week, despite Tim’s best efforts to kick us off in that direction. Instead we have reviews of the much-debated Battle: Los Angeles and the somewhat less debated Mars Needs Moms. We look at Sigourney Weaver’s comedies with Heartbreakers, Galaxy Quest, and Ghostbusters for our Artist of the Month selections. Finally, we...

Widescreen Warrior Presents: the 2011 Retrospective Awards

The Retrospectives are an idea I’ve been rolling around for a number of years now, even going back to my time with Cinema Blend. You see, it’s bothered me that we decide in the heat of the moment which film was better that year. We can’t decide what movie was the best movie in a given year just as we can’t determine if a year is going to produce a good crop of wine. It takes...

Jeff’s Five and Dime: Autism Awareness Month

Jeff’s Five and Dime is not your typical top-five list. Then again, what’s typical about Jeff? In this weekly column Jeff will bring you a top-five list meant to amuse and on the rare occasion, make you think. April is Autism Awareness month. If you do not know someone suffering from this awful disease then you should count your blessings. According to the site Autism Speaks, 1 in every 110...

Spielberg Befriends a Giant Rabbit Named Harvey

Steven Spielberg is heading behind the camera again, although he’s choosing a relatively risky project as his next one. The director will be handling a new adaptation of Harvey, the play by Mary Chase that served as the starting point for a previous remake – an iconic classic film starring Jimmy Stewart. The play tells the story of Elwood P. Dowd, a relatively ordinary man with an extraordinary...

Re-view: The Da Vinci Code

I hadn’t revisited The Da Vinci Code since I originally saw it in theaters in 2006. At the time it came out, my running joke was that all the people who had the book would now know what it was about. The book was a huge part of pop culture at the time, but finding someone who had actually read it proved difficult. It was the ultimate coffee table book – if you owned it you were clued into what...
