Weekly Blend #231 – The Curse of Taylor Swift

Why are this summer’s movies sucking so badly? This week we trace the cause back a few months to Valentine’s Day, when Rafe warned everyone that Taylor Swift was sucking the talent out of the room. See how many of those cast members are in today’s duds. Also, contrasting reviews of The A-Team, The Karate Kid, looks at Jeff Bridges’ Tron and Wild Bill, and the introduction of...

The A-Team

I don’t know that there’s been an overwhelming desire for the 1980s television series The A-Team to have a big screen adaptation. Looking at old shows that would be ripe for adaptation, the series that made Mr. T a star does seem like a natural fit, with the potential for crazy action sequences and a quantity of explosions that would make Michael Bay envious. Now the movie is here, but in a summer...

Closing Tabs Thursday: Return of the ’80s

Closing Tabs started as a weekly look at news we didn’t cover on the site throughout the week. As the site has grown, however, we’ve moved away from reporting most news (you can catch most of it regurgitated on other sites anyway) in favor of more original opinions and editorials. Still, that news is out there, clogging up the tabs on our browsers, so now we offer the column as a Tuesday/Thursday...

Weekly Blend #214 – Studio Interference

We’re in the doldrums of the year, so we don’t have a ton to talk about in the way of new reviews, but there have been several stories building with a similar theme: studio interference. We get that there is a business side to show business, but in this week’s episode we talk about two recent examples where studio interference is not only a bad thing, but could turn fans and audiences...

Weekly Blend #204 – Critics of Fortune

The episode title may serve mostly as a reference to the first image released from the upcoming big-screen adaptation of The A-Team, one of the many topics we hit on this week. We also continue our look at Hitchcock films with Dial M For Murder, reveal the reader’s picks for our last week of Hitchcock, give our take on the first episode of White Collar, respond to the idea of Joss Whedon tackling...

Closing Tabs: Jumping the Shark Edition

Each week we take note of some stories circling the Internet that for some reason, whether it be time or fate or lack of personal interest, we don’t wind up covering on the site. By the end of the week, we wind up with a bunch of tabs open on our browsers and newsreaders that just end up sitting there waiting for more attention. Here’s our attempt to put them to some use, allowing us to close the...

Weekly Blend #199 – Watching on the Moon

We skipped a lot of the new releases this week, which was probably a good move since they tended to average around 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. Instead Jeff and Rafe finally got the chance to see the long-awaited Moon. Check out our review of that and 9 inside, as well as our look at the early films of Matt Damon and editorials/rants on how cynical our society has gotten and the role of women in movies....

Another Name Pops Up For A-Team’s Bad Attitude

The only reason I’m reporting on this is because we’ve reported something previous on the subject that seemed rather definite, and now obviously it’s not. Honestly, I think it’s too early to go with any of the rumors that have been making their way across the crowded Internet, but that didn’t stop me last time, so why let it now? Apparently the rapper known as Common is no longer the leading...

First B.A., Now The A-Team Gets a Faceman

Last week, Common confirmed talks were going on between his people and Joe Carnahan’s people, with hopes that Common would be playing B.A. Baracus in the upcoming adaptation of The A-Team. Another possible name for the team of mercenaries has been revealed, and The A-Team may very well have its Faceman soon. In the original series, Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck was the team’s suave ladies man....

Common To Pity the Fool?

Since we’re already talking about ‘80s franchises brought to modern day today (read about another one here), let’s talk about former action series The A-Team. The show has been on the slate for a movie adaptation for some time. With Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnahan signed on to direct, we know this is bound to be an explosive and humorous mix of entertainment. But what actors will take on...
