Rio [Review]

Rio is a colorful and entertaining animated film for all ages that does its best to match the classic Disney style and formula. Bright, lively, optimistic and brisk, Rio gleefully continues Twentieth Century Fox Animation’s long string of hits: the Ice Age series (2002 – 2006 – 2009), Robots (2005) and Horton Hears a Who (2008). With a great voice cast, an uplifting, emotional story and...

Rafe’s Rant: Regarding The Social Network Oscar Buzz

We’re midway though November and the early Oscar buzz has started. Already magazines and online outlets are starting their predictions: Who will be nominated? Who will win? It’s a pointless endeavor I find so interesting, mostly because the lead contenders for the Oscars typically haven’t even been released yet. What we wind up with is a bunch of predictions about movies that will be overshadowed...

Weekly Blend #243 – Cookie? Biscuit?

Sorry for the delay in this week’s show. The computer we use to encode the episode died, and this time it looks like it’s permanent. We’re trying something new to bring you the episode and hope it works as well. This week’s episode sees reviews of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Let Me In, and The Social Network, as well as berating of Margaret and Jeff for not watching our...

The Social Network

I’ve been on Facebook since my return-to-college days, when the social networking site was still restricted only to people in college networks. Since then, the site has exploded, opening its doors to everyone. Over time it’s been interesting to see what friends I have from different circles, and how many of those circles cross over as other friends’ friends are revealed. It’s a reminder of...

Cursed (2005)

Cursed was an attempt to modernize and update the traditional werewolf mythos of howling at the moon and silver sensitivity by combining it with the more vampire-like lore of kill-the-sire-and-avoid-the- curse. With a cast that includes Christina Ricci, Jesse Eisenberg, Joshua Jackson and Shannon Elizabeth paired with the direction of Wes Craven you would expect decent acting, some gratuitous sexiness...

Zombieland [Review]

The zombie genre has transcended its horror roots and landed firmly in new ground. This path was started with Shaun of the Dead, which is at heart a romantic comedy, just in a world suffering from a zombie infestation. Zombieland carries on this tradition, set in a world where zombies have taken over, and the survival of the remaining humans is a story that can be told comedically instead of a horror-filled...

Adventureland [Blu-ray]

I’d heard from many of my colleagues that Adventureland was grossly mis-represented in the marketing for the movie. Instead of a sophomoric raunch comedy, the movie is more of a coming of age story, with a decent emotional core to it. I didn’t realize the weight of that until I sat down to watch the movie myself and realized just how right those other critics were. Do not approach this movie expecting...
