The Apparition [Review]

The Apparition [Review]
The Apparition is dreadful, dull and plodding. It is never scary, funny, insightful or entertaining. It is a complete misfire. At its core, writer/director Todd Lincoln seems to have a germ of an interesting idea, but the film loses touch with that idea as quickly as it introduces it. In a college science experiment, a group of parapsychologists attempt to record the proof of ghosts, spirits or similar...

Rafe’s Top Ten Movies of 2011

Rafe's Top Ten Movies of 2011
For the first time in all of my years of doing this, I’m not incredibly thrilled with my end of the year list. As usual, there are movies appearing on other people’s lists that I haven’t gotten to see, and unfortunate timing means I won’t be seeing them for another couple of weeks at the best. Rather than hold out on my “Best of” list for 2011 until the point that...

Doc Rotten’s Top 10 Movies of 2011

Doc Rotten's Top 10 Movies of 2011
Wow! What a year; 2011 was full of films that could easily be included in any top 10. In a year where I gave five stars to 5 films, it leaves little space include the vast array of other worthy, deserving films. The top five films represent the best Fantasy, Comedy, Family, Action and Horror films seen this year which is a great example of how expansive and successful each genre was in the past 12...

We stop to offer up reviews of In Time and next week’s Tower Heist. Finally, we finish off October with a nice look at some great haunting stories: The Haunting, The Changeling, and best of all, this year’s Insidious, a picture...

Like Insidious? Try These Haunting Stories!

In the long list of sub-genres that define the HORROR MOVIE, the ghost movie and the haunted house movie are decidedly different and very much alike. You can certainly have one without the other; but, most of the time, you’re treated with both. There are examples of one over the other. In classic literature, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has its share of ghosts but there’s no real haunted house....

Tim Takes On the Box Office: Hop Takes April 1st Weekend

You’ve heard Tim make his weekly predictions on our podcast, guessing how the box office numbers are going to play out as we discuss each week’s estimates. Now we’re putting them down in text just to see how good Tim’s track record winds up. Insidious [Review]

Insidious is scary-ass fun. Your goose-pimples will have goose-pimples. James Wan, the director of Saw, has crafted a new horror film with old-time sensibilities that will likely redefine ghost movies for a whole new generation. Wan, together with Saw partner Leigh Whannell and producer Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity), have succeeded in making a chilling haunted house film – full of all the expected...

In Theaters: April 1st

A little bit of controversy comes this week, with the re-release of The King’s Speech coming to theaters, now in a “cleaned up” PG-13 edition. As I talked about in last week’s Rafe’s Rant, there’s a movement online urging viewers to not see the movie after April 1st. We encourage our readers and listeners to follow that suggestion and let the Rated-R version of The King’s Speech reign...
