Rafe’s Rant: To 3D or Not to 3D?

It’s been a year and a half since James Cameron showed us just what 3D is capable of with Avatar and the topic of 3D’s usefulness is back on the table. It seems journalists everywhere are talking about it, with Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon providing a new impetus for the conversation. Half the people out there are saying 3D is nothing more than an effort on studios to drain more...

Weekly Blend #259 – 2011 Post Oscar Slaughter

You heard our predictions and hopes in the Pre-Oscar Roundup. Now it’s time to tear this doggie apart and see what we think. Listen as we analyze this year’s Oscar presentation, from our problems with Oscar.com’s “All Access” pass to our discussion of hosts and presentations to a breakdown of the winners and losers. We go more in depth with Widescreen Warrior’s Retrospectives...

Weekly Blend #252 – 2010 Wrap Up Extravaganza

It’s officially 2011, which means it’s now time to look back at the year and talk about what movies are our favorites, our least favorites, our greatest disappointments and our biggest surprises. We talk about what Artist of the Month movies have stayed with us, what actors we look forward to seeing in the future, and what 2011 holds for our interests. Finally, we do make sure to thank...

Rafe’s Rant: Have You Seen…

It’s the same story, time and time again. I meet people. It doesn’t matter what kind of people – just people. Teachers, technology advocates, fellow film lovers, shoppers at the store, and Leroy the homeless guy who sits on the island before the interstate holding up a sign asking for money (who is surprisingly well-versed in the films of Fellini). Inevitably, the conversation turns to movies....

Weekly Blend #248 – The Podcast is All Right

The podcast has always designed to be an extension of the website, discussing other things going on around the site. That’s certainly true this week, as the site has dueling reviews of Tony Scott’s Unstoppable. Nicole offers our official review, but Rafe disagrees enough to make some entertaining audio this week. We also discuss the ramifications of early Oscar predictions, Kevin Kline’s...

Inception Comes Home in December

We don’t cover a ton of release date announcements here, but as Inception is not only one of the year’s favorites among our staff, but also among our readers, I figured it was worth highlighting its upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release. Just in time for Christmas, or before it for those greedy souls like me who will want to have it right away, Christopher Nolan’s latest will be coming...

Weekly Blend #235 – It’s Called Inception

All three of us have seen Inception. Is it the groundbreaking film so many critics are praising? In a word: yes, but you should listen to hear what specifically each of us liked about the movie. We also look at The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, debate Woody Allen’s Annie Hall and Manhattan, and have another round of argument over villains as heroes. Show Links Rafe’s Inception review Rafe’s...

Inception [Review]

For years we’ve been giving Pixar credit for being one of the most consistent entities when it comes to quality filmmaking. While the animation studio continues that trend this summer, so does another force in quality storytelling: Christopher Nolan. From Memento to The Dark Knight, Nolan hasn’t maligned audiences yet, and his latest picture, Inception, just might be the crown jewel of his career...

Is Christopher Nolan Entering The Matrix?

Going into this past weekend, I know a lot of people were excited about the Inception trailer that was supposed to show in front of Inglourious Basterds. Then, for a lot of people, including me, it wasn’t there; no trailer for Christopher Nolan’s next film, which means the trailer suddenly became a lot more anticipated, especially since it wasn’t debuting online until after the weekend. Well,...
