In Theaters: Identity Thief, Side Effects

In Theaters: Identity Thief, Side Effects
Since I’m trying to jump-start life back into the site, I figured a good thing to do was to bring back some of the regular content. It doesn’t get more regular than taking a look at what’s hitting theaters each week and telling you which movie has the best chance of getting our box office dollar. Add in Tim’s Box Office predictions, and you’ve got a nice weekly summary...

In Theaters: The Lorax, Project X [March 2]

In Theaters: The Lorax, Project X [March 2]
As we talked about on this week’s show, March is a very weird month for releases. With titles like Mirror, Mirror and The Hunger Games, I guess I expected more from the month. After all, this is when we’ve gotten gems like Watchmen, Rango, and Alice in Wonderland. This year, the offerings are significantly slimmer. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see many film fanatics bypass...

In Theaters: Act of Valor, Gone, Good Deeds, Wanderlust [Feb 24]

In Theaters: Act of Valor, Gone, Good Deeds, Wanderlust [Feb 24]
We’ve got another loaded weekend at the theater. You’d almost think we’re out of the winter doldrums and into the good stuff, with theaters following the seasonal lead started by the weather, which has been ridiculously moderate here (except for the single snowfall that made us miss a podcast this week). Not only do we have a wide variety of movies, but we have a variety of takes on those...

In Theaters: Ghost Rider, The Secret World of Arrietty, This Means War [Feb 17]

In Theaters: Ghost Rider, The Secret World of Arrietty, This Means War [Feb 17]
Hope you had a good Valentine’s Day and are ready for a busy weekend at the theater. With a romantic comedy, an action sequel, and an animated story, this weekend has something for everyone, although I’m not confident that all three movies are actually any good. First up is the sequel nobody really wanted: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. I know I saw Ghost Rider in theaters and possibly...

In Theaters: September 16th

We get another barrage of movies this weekend, some of which look promising and others that look like filler between the summer and fall seasons. Regardless, it looks like this weekend’s releases are more about very focused tastes than movies with widespread appeal. First up is another Ryan Gosling movie for 2011: Drive. The trailer makes this look like a ramped down version of The Transporter, only...

In Theaters: September 9th

The last few weeks have been almost painful with their releases, but we’re starting to clear out of that. Last week we had The Debt which wound up being pretty good, despite not putting in a huge showing at the box office (I know many people who still have no idea what that movie is about – such a shame). This week is the perfect bridge between the crap of the last few weeks and the turn towards...

In Theaters: September 2nd

I’ve been misspeaking this week as I’ve said the summer season is over with and we’re moving into fall. Technically, this weekend should still count as summer. It is, after all, Labor Day weekend – an extended holiday weekend for catching movies, with one of this week’s offerings even opening early. Yet, much like the past few weeks, it feels like summer ended a long time ago and we face...

In Theaters: August 26th

As I pointed out last week, we’re in the dreary end of summer. There are no blockbusters to be found here, but technically we’re still a week away from the end of the season. Still, this weekend doesn’t look like a total loss, although you might have to do some digging to find trailers and other promotions for these films. Columbiana is a movie that has gotten shockingly little marketing. Zoe...

In Theaters: August 19th

It’s the weekend of the remake. We get four new pictures with wide releases this week, but three of the four are remakes of older movies (although one could be considered a sequel, I suppose, but rebooting a franchise is practically a remake regardless of what you call it). I suspect this will be one of the weakest weekends of the summer, and on the box office side it may even provide Rise of the...

In Theaters: August 12th

Summer is coming to a close for me. As a teacher, my summer break doesn’t last Memorial Day to Labor Day, and I head back to work soon. Of course, the movie summer season doesn’t exactly confine itself to those two holidays either. Some people still consider August to fall into the summer movie season. Others say it’s part of the fall. There’s no doubt that the blockbusters of the summer are...
