Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: Hobo With a Shotgun

I hope everyone had a good Fourth of July and avoided blowing anything up. I wonder if the studios figured everyone would be entertained by fireworks and then returning to work this week, as the home entertainment pickings are a bit slim. You have the usual Blu-ray editions of favorite movies and some low budget genre films, but there aren’t a whole lot of big titles this week. Instead of looking...

Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: Lord of the Rings – Extended Editions

Let me say up front: Sucker Punch comes out this week on DVD and Blu-ray. If you didn’t get the chance to see it in theaters, now’s your chance. If it wasn’t for one other thing, it would definitely be the pick of the week, even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the movie, I do think it’s worth looking at, particularly in HD. So, check it out and join in our discussion of the movie’s ending....

Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: Mega Python vs. Gatoroid

After a few doldrum weeks, we finally get a decent wave of home entertainment releases this week. Some of this year’s more interesting movies (Unknown, The Adjustment Bureau) are coming out on DVD and Blu-ray, along with a few titles I wanted to see but didn’t get the chance (Josh Radnor’s Happythankyoumoreplease, and Cedar Rapids, for example). But just to show we’re not the hoity-toity crucial...

Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: Battle: Los Angeles

Ugh! We’ve definitely gotten to the point of the year where studios are releasing movies from earlier in the year as home entertainment offerings. The problem is the movies being offered were the lower interest films of the year. How else do you explain us getting Red Riding Hood, Battle: Los Angeles, and Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son all hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week? Of the offerings this...

Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: True Grit

I think it’s safe to say that, when we first found out about the Coen Brothers remaking True Grit, most people were wary. After all, there was already a beloved classic version of the story starring John Wayne. What could Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and the Coens bring to a story that already had a fantastic adaptation? It turns out, quite a bit. True Grit astonished audiences with a hyper-stylized...

Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: Psych – Season 5

I was very tempted to pick something different this week as the pick of the week. After all, Drive Angry looks like great B-movie exploitation, while some of the John Wayne movies (and A Clockwork Orange) are classics. Ultimately, I just couldn’t pass up the appeal of Psych, which takes pot shots at classics like John Wayne movies. The fifth season of Psych finally delivered the long-promised Twin...

Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: Individual Alien Movies

This is an interesting week for Blu-ray releases. You have the typical direct-to-DVD fare coming out (which makes what… two of these releases for Cuba Gooding Jr. in the past month?) and a heck of a lot of slapstick comedies and classic movies. Mixed in is one of my favorites from this year, No Strings Attached and one of last year’s great movies, Blue Valentine, which I’ve not seen but heard...

Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: Blow Out

I don’t know what’s going on this week. It’s like all of the studios forgot this week existed when planning out their home entertainment release schedules. As a result, you have a few direct to DVD movies (another Sniper film? Does Billy Zane really need the money that badly?), some first time appearances on Blu-ray of existing movies, and that’s about it. Really, it’s a sorry week for home...

Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: The King’s Speech

Considering how hard I was pushing for The King’s Speech as the Best Picture of the year, it should be no surprise that it’s my pick of the week. It’s still a phenomenal film, touching, tragic, and uplifting all at the same time. It’s definitely a movie I can’t wait to watch at home with my family and start lending to friends and other family who didn’t see it when it was in theaters in...

Rafe’s Rant: Studios’ Video on Demand Plan is Ridiculous

I bought a new copy of Tron: Legacy last night at Target (bear with me for a minute. It may take me a moment to get to my point). A new release this week, the Blu-ray / DVD Combo package was discounted down to $19.99. Signs advertised that I could have gotten another $8 off if I had purchased the original Tron on Blu-ray as well (although technically I see that as spending an additional $12, not saving...
