Rafe’s Top Ten Movies of 2011

Rafe's Top Ten Movies of 2011
For the first time in all of my years of doing this, I’m not incredibly thrilled with my end of the year list. As usual, there are movies appearing on other people’s lists that I haven’t gotten to see, and unfortunate timing means I won’t be seeing them for another couple of weeks at the best. Rather than hold out on my “Best of” list for 2011 until the point that...

Box Office Results: Nobody Puts Harry Potter in the Corner

Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared. When Tim made his box office predictions earlier this week, I don’t think even he expected Harry Potter to be the behemoth it’s turned out...

Box Office Results: Transformers Rule the Earth and Moon

Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared. Earlier this week Tim made his box office predictions, letting his inner fanboy call a high prediction for Transformers: Dark of the Moon. While...

Tim Takes on the Box Office: How Big Will Transformers: Dark of the Moon Be?

You’ve heard Tim make his weekly predictions on our podcast, guessing how the box office numbers are going to play out as we discuss each week’s estimates. Now we’re putting them down in text just to see how good Tim’s track record winds up. Tune in each week as we compare Tim’s predictions against the actual numbers from the box office weekend, as Tim takes on the Box...

Weekly Blend #273 – The Movies Keep Coming

Margaret is convinced I told her we could stop doing the podcast when the movies stopped coming. Since the movies keep coming, we’re still here. This week we look at Pixar’s strike-out with Cars 2, debate the merits of Weezer, argue about Andie MacDowell’s voice, talk about the casting of the new Superman flick, and hit on who will be (or more likely won’t be) at San Diego Comic...

Box Office Results: Cars 2 Outraces Poor Critical Reception

Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared. Earlier this week Tim made his box office predictions, expecting Disney’s Cars 2 to take the box office top spot, albeit not with as great...

Cars 2 [Review]

I suppose it was inevitable. Just like no star sports player can go undefeated, eventually Pixar had to present a movie that didn’t live up to the high standards we’ve all come to expect from them. While there are some entertaining things to like about Cars 2, particularly for younger viewers, as a whole this is a terribly weak movie. With a ridiculous story, a poor change of focus, and a weak...

Tim Takes on the Box Office: Can Cars 2 Win this Week’s Race?

You’ve heard Tim make his weekly predictions on our podcast, guessing how the box office numbers are going to play out as we discuss each week’s estimates. Now we’re putting them down in text just to see how good Tim’s track record winds up. Tune in each week as we compare Tim’s predictions against the actual numbers from the box office weekend, as Tim takes on the Box...

In Theaters: June 24th

With most of this summer’s super-hero movies behind us, it’s time to move to the other staple of the season: sequels! The next four weeks bring three different franchise sequels (four if you count the reunion of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, although they are playing different characters). Despite Disney being at the front of the pack, I somehow expect this week’s sequel to be the least interesting...

Rafe’s Rant: Disney Bids for Boys

Last weekend was a desperate fight for the family dollar at the box office, between part one of the last chapter of the boy-wizard saga, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Disney’s latest animated picture, Tangled. The story of the boy wizard wound up on top, even in its second week, which is probably a bit of a concern for Walt Disney Studios. They had a lot riding on Tangled, and although...
