Weekly Blend #328 – Oscar Wrap Up 2013

Weekly Blend #328 - Oscar Wrap Up 2013
The Oscars are over and now it’s time to deconstruct Hollywood’s biggest night. We analyze quite a few aspects of the show, from the awards themselves to host Seth MacFarlane to the strengths and weaknesses of the “theme” of the evening. We discuss some of the surprise awards of the night (although there weren’t many of those) and some of the fallout to come from the festivities,...

Rafe’s 2013 Oscar Night Predictions

Rafe's 2013 Oscar Night Predictions
I probably should have put up my actual Oscar predictions a week ago, but let’s be honest: nobody is using what I say to place any bets in office betting pools. There are certainly a lot better qualified people to use as a basis for gambling, say Nate Silver, for example (whose predictions I still haven’t looked at beyond bookmarking the page). Hell, I still haven’t even seen all...

Weekly Blend #327 – Pre-Oscar Round-Up 2013

Weekly Blend #327 - Pre-Oscar Round-Up 2013
It’s that time of year again: where we gather together and offer our opinions, “if we ran the Oscars.” Hear who Rafe, Tim, and Thomas would give gold statues to if they ran the show. Some of the picks are predictable, others are outrageous, but they’re all in opinionated fun. But first, a review of A Good Day to Die Hard, Rafe rants about aging action heroes, Thomas belittles Dark...

Weekly Blend #324 – Welcome to 2013

Weekly Blend #324 - Welcome to 2013
The holiday break was nice, but so is returning to discuss a wealth of movies and movie news. This week we offer up reviews of Zero Dark Thirty and Gangster Squad and revisit a few other titles (Django Unchained and Les Miserables, for example) as we review the big news of the year: the Oscar nominees! We also discuss a new element to the show: getting you involved through SpeakPipe. You can use...

2013 Oscar Nominations Led By Lincoln and Life of Pi

2013 Oscar Nominations Led By Lincoln and Life of Pi
It’s that time of year again: time to see which movies the Academy of Arts and Sciences has selected as nominees for this year’s Oscar awards. I like to think of it as the time of year to see how many movies of substance you actually saw last year. Of course, there are those who critique the Academy for being a bit snobbish and this year should be no different, with high honors being paid to Spielberg’s...

Weekly Blend #319 – Nazi Zombies and Family Dynamics

Weekly Blend #319 - Nazi Zombies and Family Dynamics
This is this week’s new episode, but make sure you didn’t miss last week’s episode, which unfortunately also posted today. This week, we start off with a debate between Rafe and Tim regarding the announcement of Seth Macfarlane as the host of the Oscars. Then, we take a look at Argo and Sinister courtesy of Thomas and Doc Rotten. Finally, we continue our Halloween horror-fest with...

Weekly Blend #241 – Rafe’s Town

Rafe caught three out of the four new releases this week, which means a great deal of the show is spent with Rafe talking, including another look behind the curtain of writing and running a website like this. Don’t worry: Rafe’s world is nowhere near as scandalous as Easy A, full of crime as The Town, or desperate as riding in an elevator in an M. Night Shyamalan story. The episode touches...

The Town

I have to open my discussion of The Town with a bit of a disclaimer. I saw a flawed viewing of The Town. The theater the movie was presented in has a history of sound problems, and this showing was no different. Instead of having moments of booming sound at reel changes, the volume of the movie fluctuated wildly, sometimes within seconds. Dialog would be super quiet, then gunshots would roar so loud...

Extract [Review]

Mike Judge, best known as the creator of Beavis & Butt-head and King of the Hill surprised audiences with his take on the workplace, Office Space. The movie didn’t do well in theaters, but now you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know of the movie, the dialog, and the red stapler, especially if they work in an office. His follow up film was supposed to be Extract, but instead...
