Weekly Blend #332 – Fervent Fanbases, Old Sport

Weekly Blend #332 - Fervent Fanbases, Old Sport
It’s Gatsby time! The latest adaptation of the classic novel comes from Baz Luhrmann, a divisive name in entertainment, who Rafe is predisposed to dislike. So how does he wind up giving Gatsby, and what issues does Thomas take with the adaptation? Have a listen to find out. We also discuss Disney’s plans for adapting Into the Woods (or, as we call it, the next Johnny Depp weirdness project),...

Weekly Blend #313 – Is It Real or Is It Rekall?

Weekly Blend #313 - Is It Real or Is It Rekall?
The remake of Phillip K. Dick’s “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” (aka Total Recall) provides the show with a bit of a mystery: did we really see a new movie or is it just the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film with a different cast in place? Why can’t Hollywood make a faithful adaptation of Dick’s works and why do they seem to lend themselves to guilty pleasure, ridiculous...

Conan the Barbarian (2011) [Review]

How to start this review? Well first I guess I must recognize what came before. In 1982 John Milius and Oliver Stone came together to write a movie about Robert E. Howard’s most famous character, Conan. Milius went on to direct the film, and Arnold Schwarzenegger stared in it. The movie, Conan the Barbarian is a classic, and practically launched Arnold’s career. Flash forward to 2011 and...

Weekly Blend #270 – Full Metal Pirates

Wow, we’ve got one hell of a show this week. This episode is chock-full of movie goodness, from a discussion of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and how the Pirates franchise has evolved over time to a heated discussion of movies representing the Vietnam war era: Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, and Platoon. Add in a little bit about The Dark Knight Rises, Transformers: Dark of the...

Weekly Blend #269 – Tim Was Right

As much as it hurts me to say it, Tim spends a lot of time being right this week. From his box office predictions being pretty close this week to his selection of The Great Escape as one of our viewing choices this week, Tim gets to balance out all the times he’s been wrong with a really solid week this time. Join us for discussions of Priest bombing at the box office (we didn’t see it),...

Weekly Blend #212 – Kevin’s Beef

It’s an episode so long we couldn’t possibly cram it into our traditional hourlong format (a technical malfunction with the timer notwithstanding). Inside you’ll hear reviews of Sherlock Holmes, Up in the Air, and Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Darkside, as well as the finish of James Cameron month with Strange Days and True Lies. We also offer some long-overdue opinions...

Re-view: The Terminator

My first exposure to The Terminator was strictly as an Arnold Schwarzenegger film. At the time I was on an action kick and Schwarzenegger was the king of that genre. Little did I know what an important part of geekdom the campy action thriller would play. Even now, decades later, The Terminator is still a fun ride and I’m amazed at how well the movie as a whole holds up – much better than my fatigued...
