2013 Oscar Nominations Led By Lincoln and Life of Pi

2013 Oscar Nominations Led By Lincoln and Life of Pi
It’s that time of year again: time to see which movies the Academy of Arts and Sciences has selected as nominees for this year’s Oscar awards. I like to think of it as the time of year to see how many movies of substance you actually saw last year. Of course, there are those who critique the Academy for being a bit snobbish and this year should be no different, with high honors being paid to Spielberg’s...

The Master [Review]

The Master [Review]
Following a stint as sailor in the US Navy during WWII, Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) has become a drifter, bouncing from one job to the next due to his disturbingly odd quirks – including the concoction of mixed drinks from poisonous chemicals like paint thinner – getting him fired. One night after nearly poisoning a man with one of his drinks, Freddie stows away on a yacht captained by...

The Muppets [Review]

The Muppets [Review]
In the early-appearing song, “Pictures in my Head,” Kermit the frog ponders the concept of the Muppets getting back together to put on a show and poignantly asks, “Would anybody watch or even care?” It’s a good question. A decade has passed since the felt creations last appeared on the big screen, and over twenty years have passed since Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets passed away....

The Fighter [Review]

First, it’s a movie full of fantastic performances that are sure to be talked about for some time. Secondly, this is a story...

Weekly Blend #194 – Brought To You By the Letter F

We take a cue from Sesame Street this week, with the letter F used repeatedly throughout the show as we talk about Funny People, preliminary reviews of the upcoming G.I. Joe, and a new wave of remakes that includes Harvey and The Secret of NIMH. You’ll also hear part of our upcoming interview with Psych stars James Roday and Dulé Hill (thanks to Joshua Bozeman of The Blue Site.com for letting...

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian [Review]

It’s interesting to go back and read what I wrote about the original Night at the Museum, because most of the praise I had for that movie is the exact opposite of what I’m about to say for its sequel, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. While the sequel carries on the safe, family friendly atmosphere of the original, many of the things I enjoyed about the first picture are gone here,...
