The mixture of Halloween and Christmas themed releases continues this week, again seeing many holiday specials and treats coming out on Blu-ray. We’re more in the mood for horror this time, and as horrific as Will Ferrell’s take on Land of the Lost may be, it’s not what we’re talking about. Neither is the original The Stepfather, featuring Lost’s Terry O’Quinn as the terrifying patriarch. Instead we’re taking one of this year’s best movies, and certainly best horror movies as our pick of the week - Sam Raimi’s return to horror with Drag Me to Hell.

I knew I would miss Bruce Campbell with Raimi’s new horror flick. After all, the director has hardly done any movies, let alone anything in the horror genre, without his lucky charm attached in some fashion. Alison Lohman turns out to be more than adequate as a replacement lead. The actress fights off a gypsy woman with the deftness of Campbell’s Ash, then endures an onslaught of demon terrorism throughout the movie.

If you like horror or you like Sam Raimi, you are guaranteed to love Drag Me to Hell. The rest of you might check out The Proposal; a much more safe selection for the week. I didn’t like it, but our resident cynic Margaret found some enjoyment in the romantic comedy.
