Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: Star Trek The Next Generation Movie Collection

A couple of months ago, just in time for J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot, Paramount pleased fans by releasing Blu-ray editions of the original crew Star Trek movies. Several options were made available, from a set that included all six original movies to a set that only offered the three that made up a single storyline (Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home).

Paramount is finally getting around to releasing individual releases of some of the original crew movies this week, but the highlight for me, as part of The Next Generation generation, is that the TNG movies are finally coming to Blu-ray. There aren’t as many options this time around, especially since each TNG movie served as a stand-alone story. Paramount is releasing all four movies in one set, which is our pick of the week, or First Contact (arguably the best of the TNG movies) by itself.

While I am excited to be able to finish my Star Trek movie collection on Blu-ray (at least until this year’s Star Trek comes out in a few months), I am also reminded of how bad some of these movies got towards the end. Paramount made a really good decision in rebooting the franchise, and Abrams proved to be a fantastic pick to lead that reboot. Still, there are at least two good movies in this collection, and a few good ideas in the other films, even if they don’t wind up well executed.
