Home Entertainment Pick of the Week: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
We've gotten to the time of the year where a lot of the movies we saw earlier in the year are now making their way to DVD. If you look back in our archives, you'll find reviews for several of this week's big releases, including The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, I Love You, Beth Cooper, Food, Inc., and our pick of the week, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Make no mistake, G.I. Joe is far from a masterpiece. But in a summer that started out strong and dwindled down quickly, the toy-based movie provided a saving grace when it comes to popcorn stories. Fans of the original cartoon should find enough to like to enjoy the new movie (although plenty to nitpick) and non-fans should enjoy the action sequences of the movie, even if some of the story is rather silly and the titular Cobra only makes it on screen for thirty seconds or so. Real Joe fans might also enjoy a couple other DVD releases this week, including season 1.2 of the original cartoon.
For those looking for something with a little more substance than the flashy action of G.I. Joe, our own Jeff Clark was highly complementary of the heavy documentary Food, Inc. I haven't seen it yet so making it the pick of the week didn't feel right, but it definitely sounds worth checking out.
