One of the Widescreen Warrior.com crew’s favorite 2010 movies comes out on Blu-ray and DVD this week: Shutter Island.

Valentine’s Day: the much maligned holiday started by the greeting card companies; an occasion for candy, jewelry, and floral retailers to line their pockets with this manipulative ploy for commercial gain. Right? Well, maybe, sort of. But to be fair (and sentimental), Valentine’s Day is an occasion to celebrate those close relationships that are so valuable to us.

Being in my mid-twenties, the John Wayne generation ended before I ever entered this world. When the opportunity to review one of “The Duke’s” films on Blu-ray arose I jumped at it not know exactly I was getting in to. The Green Berets not only stars the legendary actor, but it is one of only two films he gets credit for co-directing.

The raunch comedy has really progressed over the past few years, thanks in part to directors like Judd Apatow and Todd Phillips. That’s why it’s not incredibly surprising that Phillips’s latest movie, The Hangover is a strong addition to the genre.

While Pixar’s Up has certainly dominated my attention over the past few weeks, leading up to it’s Blu-ray and DVD release this week, I want to take a minute to point out a few other releases below that haven’t gotten much attention. In fact, there are a couple that people may have missed entirely. In fact, the entire list of Blu-ray releases are worth scanning over this week.

We've gotten to the time of the year where a lot of the movies we saw earlier in the year are now making their way to DVD.

This week’s pick of the week should come as no surprise to anyone who has read this site or listened to our podcast in the past. The new Battlestar Galactica won me over quickly and kept me as a dedicated viewer throughout its entire run. Even the between-season webseries were fun to watch, as was the made-for-tv movie Razor. The mixture of Halloween and Christmas themed releases continues this week, again seeing many holiday specials and treats coming out on Blu-ray. We’re more in the mood for horror this time, and as horrific as Will Ferrell’s take on Land of the Lost may be, it’s not what we’re talking about.

It’s the month of Halloween, which means studios are quickly trying to capitalize on that by tossing out re-releases of horror favorites on DVD and Blu-ray. This week that includes the lackluster Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Wolf, as well as the long desired Trick ‘r Treat.

A couple of months ago, just in time for J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot, Paramount pleased fans by releasing Blu-ray editions of the original crew Star Trek movies.
