2013 Oscar Nominations Led By Lincoln and Life of Pi

It’s that time of year again: time to see which movies the Academy of Arts and Sciences has selected as nominees for this year’s Oscar awards. I like to think of it as the time of year to see how many movies of substance you actually saw last year. Of course, there are those who critique the Academy for being a bit snobbish and this year should be no different, with high honors being paid to Spielberg’s biopic of the great American president Lincoln (which really tells the two-hour story of getting an Amendment passed); Ang Lee’s 3D adaptation of Yann Martel’s existential book Life of Pi, and Amour, this year’s great little film that nobody has seen.

This year, Lincoln leads the other nominated films with twelve nominations including Direction, Best Picture, and Best Actor (which most people consider a sure-thing for Daniel Day-Lewis). Life of Pi isn’t far behind with eleven nominations in many of the same categories. Other contenders like Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook are being recognized in the expected ways, although I’ll be honest and admit a surprising recognition of Django Unchained (with five nominations) and Flight (with two).  Speaking of surprising, there are a few glaring omissions from the Direction category, including Ben Affleck (Argo) and Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), both of which captured Best Picture nominations but went without recognition despite nominations from the Director’s Guild of America earlier this week.

The Oscar broadcast, hosted by Seth MacFarlane, will air on February 24th on ABC at 8:30 p.m. Eastern. Check back for more information on how to spend that evening with the Widescreen Warrior crew. And don’t forget to look for our podcast this weekend for our reactions and discussion of the nominations. In the meantime, discuss the nominees below.

I’m glad to see nominations for Life of Pi and Beasts of the Southern Wild, but I know that Best Picture will likely go to a film that no one will care about within the next twenty years… like 65% of the Best Picture winners.

Wow. I think you’re more crankier than me in regards to past Oscar Best Pictures. I would have said 20% are forgetful and would have gone back 60 years ago to point out irrelevant films. I think I’ll have to abdicate my throne as the Official Curmudgeon and place the crown on your head Tom.

As for the Oscars, my instinctive vibe towards “Lincoln” dominating the Oscar race has only gotten stronger. It may not be the best film of the nominees but it hearken back to what a traditional Oscar winning film should be: a grand historical epic filled with drama and tragedy. And I think this year the Academy is going to get all nostalgic again despite Seth McFarland hosting.

BTW McFarland was actually quite funny during the presentation of the nominees. Kinda a sedate Ricky Gervais. Not to hard-hitting but not playing the soft game either. He may actually turn out to be a good host as long as he doesn’t bring Stevie or Brian along.

And is it me or does McFarland remind anyone else of Peter Brady hopped up on steroids?

Wow. Silver Linings Playbook has nominations in all 6 major categories: Picture, Director and the 4 acting. That’s rather impressive.

It just missed my top ten. Best crowd pleaser of 2012.
