Great podcast episode. I listened last night. Would love to hear you guys steer into a little more depth about your opinions of the scenes, simply because I hear from people I talk to that they are confused what the heck was going on in ep 1. I know the episode is a hodgepodge so there’s a lot to recap, but instead of just going over what happened (which is totally cool too) just kinda highlight and discuss things that may confuse you or the watcher. If that makes sense. Because chances are- there are a lot of things coming up that will seem confusing and it’ll be nice to hear you guys take those scenes and discuss them in more depth.
My ‘wth’ kind of moment (forgot your exact phrasing) was actually the scene between the reporter and the school teacher. Now…It’s the 1940′s, right? I saw some correlation between their secretive romance and that of Kit and Alma (and a little between Leo and Teresa in their weirdness- not everyone could have sex or think about having sex in those kinds of places and also is kind of a “taboo” to most people). These relationships TABOO issues in that time period. The race issue and the gay issue. What kind of bothered me was the cavalier attitude Kit Walker and also Lana have.
My true wth moment where I actually felt “out of the moment” was when Lana leaned in for a kiss with the curtains open like it’s 2012. I really don’t think the people hiding taboo’d relationships were quite so…blaise about the whole thing. I think they were secretive, maybe even paranoid that they wouldn’t be caught. As small as that scene was, I just didn’t buy Lana’s “oh no one will see us” and Kit’s “let’s tell our parents” attitudes. It’s one thing to say “I wish we could tell the world how much we love each other” than actual act like those actors are from 2012 where it’s much more accepted than in the 1940′s. I hope that makes sense as I feel I’m rambling a bit. I guess it just felt to me that they weren’t really in the period moment and just acting like actors from today trying to act for that time period (which of course, they are. But show some TRUE doom and gloom about the relationships being a no-no than acting like it WASN’T a big deal – when it really was.)
I was fine with the bug thing– it’s actually interesting to me that they could be adding an alien possibility to the show (or just the example of what Kit has *made up* in his mind about what happened. Maybe he just BELIEVES it happened).

Mostly I believe I like the first episode. I wish they’d kind of let Sister Jude just be that perfect example of what she wants everyone else to be like instead of making her just as twisted as everyone else. I know she hates that part of her self that finds that attraction and I’m sure they’ll dig into that– but sometimes with people who do twisted things, it’d be nice to see that they truly really believe what they “preach” and not have everyone hide some foul little secret like her wanting to disrobe in her red nightie and seduce the younger man. But– I’m sure they’ll try and rustle up many taboo ideas in the show given their track record and so far, I’m in it for the haul. I like it much better than I liked the beginning of Season 1 at any rate…

I’ll be catching your podcast next week. I listen on my iphone so I have to wait to DL the ep, but I’ll definitely be listening and chiming in when I can!

    Sincerely,
    -Peligrie

I hope I also gave you some things to think about with what I thought of the show. I think there are a good deal of things that could be so explored in more depth :) Happy Saturday gentlemen.

Thanks for the feedback, Peligrie. I like what you have to say about the type of recap and review we should provide during the show. One of our goals is to improve the balance between “recap” and “review” – it may be we’re just so apologetically excited to get to and to share the next crazy chapter of this insane series. It’s all so bizarre and brilliant.

There seems to be a direct correlation between the setting of the show (Asylum) and breaking taboos. The show’s creators have a history of tackling these taboos in their other shows as well – but, here, they can address their impact in 1964. How it all relates to alien abductions and spider chips, I have no idea.

The creature in the woods, however, I’m convinced are Zombie Triffids – LOL.
