Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.
After a couple of impressive box office weeks, the market certainly has been disappointing the last two weeks. I guess The Hunger Games couldn’t dominate forever, but I expected this weekend’s new releases to fare a lot better now that Katniss fever died down. Consider me a bit surprised then to see that half of this week’s new entries didn’t even break into the top five.

|---|---|---|
| 1. | Think Like a Man | $18 million |
| 2. | The Pirates: Band of Misfits | $11.4 million |
| 3. | The Lucky One | $11.3 million |
| 4. | The Hunger Games | $11.25 million |
| 5. | The Five-Year Engagement | $11.15 million |
Well, there you have it. Think Like a Man manages to claim a second week of victory, coming in above the child-friendly Pirates and Jason Segel in The Five-Year Engagement. Even more surprising, however, are the more adult releases of the week, which you won’t find on the chart above. Jason Statham’s latest action piece, Safe, just missed the top five… by a couple million dollars, coming in with $8 million for the weekend. Considering the low level of advertising I’ve seen surrounding the film that isn’t a huge question mark for me. My big curiosity comes in the form of The Raven, the less-than-stellar mystery that features John Cusack playing Edgar Allen Poe. The movie barely breaks the $7 million mark for the weekend, coming in at 7th place. I know The Raven wasn’t great, but do we really live in a world where a book by Steve Harvey beats the bejeezus out of a story inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe?
Yes. We do.
This weekend marked the end of the Winter / Spring film season. Next weekend we get The Avengers kicking off the Summer season. Not only does the film have four or five successful films feeding it, but the initial reviews surrounding The Avengers are great! Will it challenge The Hunger Games for one of the biggest box office takes of the year? See what Tim thinks mid-week as Tim takes on the Box Office!
