After Weeks of Teenage Dominion, Ticket Buyers Think Like a Man [Box Office Results]

Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.

You might notice a lack of fresh reviews on the website this week. Not only have I been completely slammed, but none of our writing staff took interest in any film coming out this week. That’s half a dozen “no go”s for Think Like a Man, The Lucky One, and Disney’s Chimpanzee. We tend to have a pretty diverse crowd when it comes to our staff, so it didn’t come as much surprise when Tim predicted that none of the new releases would do that well this weekend. Consider me quite surprised when not only did this weekend’s releases show up in the top five, but all three did rather decently. It turns out, our staff may be some of the only people who weren’t all that interested in the new releases.

Tim's Predictions (3/10 right)
Box Office Estimates*
1. The Hunger Games$17 millionThink Like a Man$33 million
2. The Three Stooges$14 millionThe Lucky One$22.8 million
3. The Lucky One$13 millionThe Hunger Games$14.5 million
4. Think Like a Man$12 millionChimpanzee$10.2 million
5.The Cabin in the Woods$10 millionThe Three Stooges$9.2 million
I don’t really have much to say, other than it’s a bit disappointing to see The Hunger Games drop to third place. After three weeks in the top spot, I was fully expecting Katniss Everdeen to keep on top until The Avengers kicks off the summer season in a few weeks. Even more disappointing is that The Cabin in the Woods drops out of the top five entirely, making only $27 million in its two weeks so far. Everyone I know that has seen it has talked about how transcendent a movie it is for the genre, but are enough people seeing it for it to actually have that impact? Only time will tell.
Originally I wouldn’t have expected much from next week, with a Jason Segel rom-com and John Cusack playing Edgar Allen Poe, but now that The Hunger Games has been defeated, it’s entirely possible next weekend’s movies might fare better than I expected. What does Tim think? Check back mid-week as Tim Takes on the Box Office!
