Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.
*Estimates based on information provided by Box Office Mojo
|1.||American Reunion||$33 million||The Hunger Games||$33.5 million|
|2.||The Hunger Games||$27 million||American Reunion||$21.5 million|
|3.||Titanic 3D||$20 million||Titanic 3D||$17 million|
|4.||Wrath of the Titans||$13 million||Wrath of the Titans||$15 million|
|5.||Mirror Mirror||$8 million||Mirror Mirror||$11 million|
The rest of the box office plays out pretty much as Tim expected, although Titanic wound up coming in a bit lower than I expected after the media went crazy about its return (as did movie fans if our own traffic is any indication). I guess I expected more people to actually go see Cameron’s epic, but it looks like more people read about it than saw it, or maybe saved their pennies and just watched the old DVD or VHS copy lying around the house. Either way, I expected more.
This week has more promise in the way of competition against The Hunger Games, but don’t expect that fever to die down. The big news story this weekend was whether Gary Ross would be returning for the sequel, so it’s clear people haven’t had enough of Katniss Everdeen quite yet. Can The Cabin in the Woods or The Three Stooges steal some of that momentum? Check back mid-week to see what Tim thinks, as Tim takes on the box office!
