Tim Takes On the Box Office: Duel of the 3D Fates

You’ve heard Tim make his weekly predictions on our podcast, guessing how the box office numbers are going to play out as we discuss each week’s estimates. Now we’re putting them down in text just to see how good Tim’s track record winds up. Tune in each week as we compare Tim’s predictions against the actual numbers from the box office weekend, as Tim takes on the Box Office.

The 3D presentation of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace is the dark horse this weekend. Is there enough love for Star Wars and 3D to overcome the fact that most people hate The Phantom Menace? My money says no, and so does Tim’s, although he still thinks Lucas’s film will perform well despite the appearance of three newcomers this weekend, another of which is 3D as well. The result is a duel between two 3D films. Two films enter. One film leaves. Which reminds me, a 3D presentation of Beyond Thunderdome would be pretty kickass…

Tim's Box Office Predictions: February 10-12
1. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island$25.2 million
2. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace [3D]$23.4 million
3. Safe House$16 million
4. Chronicle$13 million
5.The Vow$10.5 million

Star Wars 3D, or as I call it, Star Wars 2nd place, shall be trumped by Dwayne Johnson and the Journey sequel, although I expect it to be close.   My pick of the week should be landing in third.  I mean Ryan Reynolds and Denzel – how can you go wrong with Safe House?  Chronicle should continue its impressive returns with a fourth place take this week, leaving The Vow to snatch up the early Valentine’s date night crowd’s money.   All in all I think this will be a pretty impressive weekend as far as total grosses go.  It all really hinges on Star Wars though.  Can the second worst movie in the saga still draw a huge crowd?  We shall see this weekend.  Until next time, have fun at the box office!

Wait… second worst? Which one do you think is worse than Phantom Menace?

I always thought Attack of the Clones to be the worst in the saga.

Going up against either of those movies is a no win scenario. Hell, Revenge of the Sith is still a pretty boring sit… and that’s the better of the three!

I actually liked Phantom Menace the best upon first viewing. It offered so much potential for better sequels only to be followed up by disappointing results
