Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.
This whole box office prediction thing is a little scary sometimes. You have weeks like last week where Tim was completely off, and then turn around and have this week where Tim admits his strategy isn’t much better than throwing darts and recording the results, yet he gets things so very close. How close? Seven out of ten, which is pretty good considering how far off Tim can be sometimes. Take a look:
*Estimates based on information provided by Box Office Mojo |
||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Chronicle | $27 million | Chronicle | $22 million |
| 2. | The Woman in Black | $17 million | The Woman in Black | $21 million |
| 3. | The Grey | $11 million | The Grey | $9.5 million |
| 4. | Big Miracle | $8 million | Big Miracle | $9.5 million |
| 5. | One for the Money | $7 million | Underworld Awakening | $5.6 million |
So there you go: Chronicle does indeed come in first, barely eking out a victory ahead of The Woman in Black, which many expected to take the top spot of the weekend. Tim may not have been right on the money, but his order is impressive, right down to Big Miracle being beaten by The Grey. I never would have predicted that. I guess that’s why this is Tim’s column and not mine.
This week brings the big enigma of Star Wars in 3D. Normally, I would know right where that would come in, but it’s The Phantom Menace, not one of the better movies. How does Tim think that will affect other newer competitors? Check back mid-week as Tim takes on the Box Office!
