Trailer Park: Prometheus

Ridley Scott may have been playing coy with fans and his new science-fiction film, but the ruse is up. For months Scott has evaded questions about whether Prometheus was related to his iconic 1979 science-fiction entry. As pictures have come out, fans have devoted themselves to the idea that this is a sequel or prequel to Scott’s own Alien. Now the first trailer is out for Prometheus and it’s pretty damn apparent that Scott has returned to his own creation for a second adventure.

The teaser trailer for Prometheus doesn’t give much away as far as the story goes, but stylistically it’s an exact duplicate as the trailers for Alien, from the audio approach to the slowly appearing letters that make up the movie’s title. What we get is a barrage of imagery that is intriguing, but unrevealing. How’s that for a teaser?

Honestly, I haven’t been a big fan of Scott’s more recent work. I want to like his movies, but I don’t. I’m really hoping Prometheus turns that around for me. The trailer certainly has me more enthusiastic about anything I’ve seen from Scott since 2007’s American Gangster (and before that Black Hawk Down in 2001), but with that excitement comes the potential for a huge letdown. You know anyone who is a fan of Alien is going to be excited that Scott has returned to his own franchise for a new film, but can the director pull off another exciting story? I guess we’ll see. I can’t imagine the studio will be willing to carry this approach throughout their entire marketing campaign, so I expect we’ll find out more about Prometheus before it hits screens in June.
