Box Office Results: The Help Continues to Rule All

Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.

Earlier this week, Tim made his predictions for the week, without much hope for the Labor Day weekend releases. While the lack of competition is good for Disney’s The Help, it almost feels as if the studios ran out of steam before summer came to a close. So how did Tim fare with this week’s predictions?

Sure enough, Tim had the right idea, even if he had the wrong order – the new releases just aren’t interesting enough people. Even if you take into account that The Debt came out on Wednesday (taking in a cumulative $11.6 million for the five day), it still wasn’t enough to climb to the top of the charts. Apollo 18 proved that there’s a reason it was shoved back from March into a vacant hole, and Shark Night had to face the fact that nobody wants to see a PG-13 horror flick in 3D when they could see Piranha 3D do the same thing better with an R-rating last year.

In our conversation today, Tim seemed to think the coming week will finally overcome The Help and make the box office interesting again. I’m not sure I fully agree with him. Two of this week’s releases only have limited theatrical runs, and one of those looks horrible. Will they actually make a dent or will The Help continue to dominate? Will studios come up with a better excuse than a hurricane for the poor records of the past few weeks? Check back mid week, when Tim Takes on the Box Office.
