Tim Takes on the Box Office: Labor Day? More Like Stay-at-Home Day, Right?

You’ve heard Tim make his weekly predictions on our podcast, guessing how the box office numbers are going to play out as we discuss each week’s estimates. Now we’re putting them down in text just to see how good Tim’s track record winds up. Tune in each week as we compare Tim’s predictions against the actual numbers from the box office weekend, as Tim takes on the Box Office.

Everyone’s running late this week. Tim sent these in to me late Thursday, after I sent him a reminder that I hadn’t gotten them so far. Then I turned around and got to busy to put them up on Friday. So here are Tim’s predictions for the week, just about 24 hours before we see how he’ll fare. He certainly doesn’t have much hope for the Labor Day weekend and I can’t say I blame him, although having seen The Debt now (review coming soon) I certainly hope he’s wrong on at least one count here.

Tim’s Box Office Predictions:
September 2nd-4th, 2011
1. The Help
$14
million
2. Apollo 18
$13
million
3. Shark Night 3D
$11
million
4. The Debt
$7.5
million
5. Columbiana
$7
million

Tim Says: With another week of lackluster releases, I have a feeling “The Help” will hold on once again to the top spot. But I do believe it will be close as “Apollo 18″ should come in right behind at second place. Even though in my own opinion, this will be a complete waste of film. After the success of “Piranha”, “Shark Night” looks to try and cash in on the campy horror premise. Unfortunately, the only way to make that work is with an R rating. The PG-13 “Shark” is sure to raise a few eyebrows but ultimately disappoint its viewers. “The Debt”, which has had the least amount of press and advertising of the new releases, should fall into fourth, leaving the critically underwhelming “Columbiana” to come in 5th. So lets be honest: the only real winners this weekend are the people who don’t go to the movies and are waiting for the release of “Drive”.

Don’t forget to check back Sunday to see how Tim fared with his guesses. What are your predictions for this box office weekend?
