Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.
You caught us. Tim didn’t make his usual predictions earlier this week. Unlike last week, it’s not my fault they didn’t go up. I didn’t get them from our box office guru until late Friday, at which point I didn’t have time to post them to the site. Let’s hear it for crammed weekends. Hell, I barely have time to write this up now. Still, I did have Tim’s predictions before the weekend, so let’s take a look at how he fared now that the weekend estimates have been released:
| 1. | Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D | million |
The Help | million |
| 2. | Fright Night 3D | million |
Rise of the Planet of the Apes | million |
| 3. | Conan the Barbarian | million |
Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D | million |
| 4. | The Help | million |
Conan the Barbarian | million |
| 5. | Rise of the Planet of the Apes | million |
The Smurfs | million |

This is what happens when it’s still technically the summer season but the releases aren’t really summer type releases. Although all of this weekend’s fleet of remakes and sequels sounded good on paper, none of them performed that well. As a whole, the box office is significantly lower than Tim expected, making this a terrible time for picking how movies are going to do.
If you didn’t notice, several of the new releases didn’t even make it into the top five. Fright Night, a remake of a cult classic horror picture, just missed the top five, coming in at 6th place with $7.9 million. Meanwhile, the romantic comedy One Day is way back in 9th place, barely breaking the $5 million mark. Somehow, Tim called that one, not including it in his predictions.
The end of summer slump is likely to continue this week, with three new movies that seem kind of homeless – a horror movie (Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark), a stoner comedy (Our Idiot Brother), and an action piece that several people are just discovering (Columbiana). I wouldn’t expect any better a performance for next weekend’s box office than this week’s, although I’m certainly not the expert here. How does our “expert” think things will play out? Check back mid week, when Tim Takes on the Box Office.
