Box Office Results: Comedies Can’t Compete with Transformer Power

Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.

Earlier this week Tim made his box office predictions, expecting Transformers to maintain its stranglehold on the American box office, especially in light of this week’s contenders: new comedies Zookeeper and Horrible Bosses. In Tim’s (and most people’s) minds, the new comedies simply couldn’t compete with the blockbuster power of Transformers. So how did our Box Office guru fare with his predictions?

As expected, Transformers: Dark of the Moon held on to the top spot, although it wasn’t quite as successful as Tim expected, seeing a 51% drop in ticket sales. It’s worth mentioning it’s grossed $261 million in only two weeks. Should we expect another Transformers movie? Indubitably, even if Shia LaBeouf says he’s not up for another one.

The big surprise is that Kevin James didn’t come in with the appeal Tim expected (although Tim even admitted on our last show that he’d love to be wrong about how big he expected Zookeeper to be). Instead another R-rated comedy managed to do well, with Horrible Bosses taking the second spot. Add in that Bad Teacher managed to stay in the top five and it’s pretty obvious that the current audience for comedies has Tim a little stymied.

This week sees the final Harry Potter movie coming and the last real opportunity for a movie to break $100 million this summer. Just how big does Tim expect the boy wizard’s last adventure to be? And how big is the appeal of a new Pooh movie for the younger crowd and nostalgic adults? We’ll see in this week’s predictions, as Tim Takes on the Box Office.
