Let me say up front: Sucker Punch comes out this week on DVD and Blu-ray. If you didn’t get the chance to see it in theaters, now’s your chance. If it wasn’t for one other thing, it would definitely be the pick of the week, even though I wasn’t a huge fan of the movie, I do think it’s worth looking at, particularly in HD. So, check it out and join in our discussion of the movie’s ending. You won’t be sorry… or if you are, at least you didn’t pay to see it in theaters.
Zack Snyder’s latest isn’t our pick of the week this week, however. Instead, that honor goes to Peter Jackson’s tremendous trilogy adaptation, The Lord of the Rings. This week sees the Extended Editions come out on Blu-ray – an overdue release in the minds and hearts of many fans. The theatrical versions of the movies came out a while ago, but in most people’s minds those versions stopped being worth much the second we got to see the extended cuts. With this release, the version everyone prefers of the beloved trilogy is finally available in Blu-ray.
Now, there has been some controversy surrounding these releases, particularly due to some color timing changes on Fellowship of the Ring. My understanding (I haven’t actually seen these releases yet) is that the changes aren’t noticeable to most movie watchers, and that they don’t make that big a difference even when they are noticeable. You still have those purists who want everything exactly the way it was in the original release, to who I have to say: why are you worrying about the extended editions anyway? If you want the movie the way it was originally presented, pick up the theatrical cuts that have been out for a while now and move on.
