After a few doldrum weeks, we finally get a decent wave of home entertainment releases this week. Some of this year’s more interesting movies (Unknown, The Adjustment Bureau) are coming out on DVD and Blu-ray, along with a few titles I wanted to see but didn’t get the chance (Josh Radnor’s Happythankyoumoreplease, and Cedar Rapids, for example). But just to show we’re not the hoity-toity crucial website some people accuse us of being, we’re going silly with this week’s pick of the week.
At first glance, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid is just another of the SyFy channel’s “monster of the week” movies. I mean, it’s right there in the title: a battle between a huge python and an alligator. Awesome, right? But the true brilliance is in the casting. Not only does the film give you an epic(ly bad) monster battle, but it also brings together the two biggest pop sensations of the ‘80s: Debbie Gibson and Tiffani! And not only are they in the movie, but they also get to fight each other? How can you not want to see that? I mean, it’s every male child of the ‘80s wet dream! And now you can, on DVD or Blu-ray. Totally rad, right?
Okay, maybe I’m overselling this week’s pick. It’s a hokey, low-budget schlockfest. But it’s also a lot of fun, and sometimes that’s what we’re in the mood for. Besides, after picking Battle: Los Angeles last week, this column can’t take itself too seriously, can it?
