Ugh! We’ve definitely gotten to the point of the year where studios are releasing movies from earlier in the year as home entertainment offerings. The problem is the movies being offered were the lower interest films of the year. How else do you explain us getting Red Riding Hood, Battle: Los Angeles, and Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son all hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week?
Of the offerings this week, Battle: Los Angeles is probably the most solid offering outside of some Criterion films I’m not completely familiar with. Yes, I just listed it as one of the not-so-good movies of the year, and I stand by that, but when you’re looking at what’s being offered this week, it does tend to rise to the top. Besides, it really wasn’t that bad – it just was incredibly derivative and unoriginal. So much so that many of you may have missed it in theaters waiting for it to come home. Well, the wait is over.
If Battle: Los Angeles isn’t your style, maybe you can get through this week with some of the Harry Potter movies coming to Blu-ray in anticipation of the last film coming to theaters. That’s almost the direction I’d rather go, if it wasn’t for the fact that I already own those movies on DVD and have no interest in buying them again, high definition or not. Frankly, your best bet this week is just to avoid the home releases and head out to see a movie in theaters. Of course, that means leaving the safety of your house and interacting with complete strangers, but when the alternative is Big Mommas, it’s a sacrifice you should be willing to make.
